"The pursuit of knowledge is more important than its possession" - Albert Einstein

The mission of the History, Social Sciences, and Philosophy (HSSP) Department is to create learning opportunities for students, conduct service to the campus and community, and advance research and scholarship in our respective academic disciplines.
The HSSP Department is the home of faculty teaching courses in the following seven academic areas: anthropology, diversity studies, history, philosophy, political science, religion, and sociology. In addition to the faculty teaching courses in these subject areas, HSSP has four affiliated units that support community learning, service, and research: the Sound Collection Lab, the Pebley Center for Arkansas Historical and Cultural Materials, the Drennen-Scott Historic Site (including the Willhaf House), and The Democracy Project (including Constitution Week), which are all open to the campus and the community.

The department offers two majors: a B.A. in history, and a B.S. in history with social studies teacher licensure. In addition, students can complete five minors including diversity studies, history, philosophy, political science, and sociology. The diversity studies minor offers a multidisciplinary curriculum drawing from courses offered across campus.

Drennen-Scott Historic Site

The fully restored Drennen-Scott and Willhaf houses offer an intimate look into the River Valley's history through the contrasting stories of a wealthy town founder and a working-class immigrant family.

Since its establishment in 2003, this public, non-circulating archive has been collecting, preserving, and making available for research historical materials from the River Valley and surrounding areas in Arkansas and Oklahoma.
